I usually account for my expenses to see what I’m spending with and where I can save. Very few expenses are left out. I’ve been asked about how I do it, so I’m posting here.
My phone is in my pocket almost all the time, so I try to record it almost immediately after spending. However, the small screen is too bad for analysis, so all expenses go to GnuCash.
How do I record it? For a while I thought of developing an app for quick recording and then exporting in a GnuCash-compatible format.
I’ve decided for sticking to the notes app, and typing directly in CSV. It includes date, value, source & destination accounts, and description. It sort of looks like this:
15/07;23.52;Cash;Groceries;Milk, cereal, and eggs 16/07;32.5;Card;Restaurants;Fancy Flavour
Then I just copy and import into GnuCash. And that became habit.
